This role offers not only the chance to hone your skills within an award-winning catering team but also a strong emphasis on work-life balance and comprehensive training, making it an attractive prospect for those looking to advance their culinary journey.

Understanding the Second Chef Role at Care UK

At Care UK, a Second Chef is more than just a support role; it’s a position of collaboration and innovation. You’ll be instrumental in raising culinary standards through sharing knowledge, developing new ideas, and contributing to a culture of continuous improvement. With access to a robust supply chain, you’ll have the autonomy to craft nutritious and well-balanced menus. The ideal candidate is self-motivated, flexible, enthusiastic, and possesses the confidence to take initiative in resolving kitchen challenges while maintaining team morale and discipline.

What You’ll Be Doing: Making a Tangible Difference

This role extends beyond supporting the Head Chef. As a Second Chef, you will be empowered to take charge of kitchen operations during the Head Chef’s absence. A key aspect of this position involves utilizing modern equipment and fresh, local produce to create diet-sensitive meals for residents, ensuring they receive both exceptional flavour and optimal nutrition. You'll actively participate in menu development, engage with residents to understand their preferences and dietary needs, and prepare food that adheres to specific requirements. In essence, this role is about making a real and positive difference in the lives of others.

Key Considerations for Candidates

To excel in this role, candidates should possess:

  • A Catering Diploma (City & Guilds/BTEC) and NVQ 2/3 in practical cookery.
  • Essential Health and Safety knowledge and Food Hygiene Certificates (minimum level 2).
  • A solid understanding of nutritionally balanced menu planning.
  • Proven ability to cater for specific dietary needs.
  • While not essential, experience in a care home setting, stock control, or budget management would be advantageous.
  • Above all, a genuine passion for enhancing the lives of others and a desire to work in an environment that is both challenging and fulfilling.
