Unlock Your Culinary Potential: Second Chef Opportunity at The University of Nottingham

Are you a passionate chef looking to elevate your career within a dynamic and supportive environment? The University of Nottingham is actively seeking an enthusiastic and motivated Second Chef / Deputy Head Chef to join its esteemed catering team. This is a remarkable opportunity for an individual eager to contribute to an award-winning university known for its exceptional student experience and global significance.

About the Role:

As the Second Chef in one of our vibrant Halls of Residence at the Jubilee Campus, you will play a crucial role in supporting and deputising for the Head Chef. This is a hands-on position that offers a diverse range of responsibilities, from preparing and serving high-quality meals for students during term time to catering for a variety of events, conferences, and even weddings of up to 350 guests during vacation periods. You will be instrumental in ensuring the smooth operation of both kitchen and front-of-house activities, from formal banquets to the everyday student dining experience.

Advantages for Your Career Path:

This role presents a compelling proposition for ambitious culinary professionals:

  • Career Progression: This is an ideal stepping stone for chefs looking to take on more responsibility and advance their leadership skills in a prestigious academic setting.
  • Work-Life Balance: Unlike many roles in the hospitality sector, this position offers more sociable hours, contributing to a healthier work-life balance.
  • Job Security: Enjoy the stability of a permanent, year-round contract with one of the UK's leading universities, providing a consistent and reliable employment future.
  • Continuous Development: The University is committed to your growth, offering structured training, mentorship, and the opportunity to gain industry-recognised qualifications.
  • Excellent Benefits Package: Beyond a competitive salary, you will benefit from a generous holiday allowance (27 days plus bank holidays and university closure days), an Employee Assistance Programme, various staff discounts, access to state-of-the-art sports facilities, and a supportive team environment.

Key Considerations for Candidates:

To thrive in this role, candidates should possess the following:

  • Culinary Expertise: A strong foundation in food production, ideally with qualifications such as 706 1/2 or NVQ 1/2, or equivalent practical experience in a busy kitchen.
  • Leadership Potential: Proven supervisory experience and the confidence to lead and motivate a team.
  • Operational Skills: Competence in stock management and a good understanding of Microsoft Office software.
  • Passion for Food: A genuine love for creating high-quality, consistent meals and a keen eye for detail.
  • Flexibility: The role requires working 36.25 hours per week, across 5 out of 7 days, with a standard shift of 11:15 am – 7:30 pm, including regular weekends. Occasional early or late shifts may be necessary for special events. Job share arrangements may be considered.

The recruitment process includes an interview and a practical skills test, designed to assess your capabilities effectively. This is more than just a job; it's an opportunity to be part of a vibrant community and build a fulfilling career in culinary arts within a stable and rewarding educational institution.
