Birmingham City University is seeking a dedicated and proactive Security Officer to join our Estates and Facilities team. Based across our vibrant city-centre campuses, you will play a key role in ensuring the safety, security, and wellbeing of our students, staff, and visitors.
Working closely with the Security Supervisors and Security Operations Managers, you’ll bring a professional, flexible, and customer-focused approach, helping us deliver a high-quality security service that reflects the University’s core values.
The Role
You will provide a professional, approachable, and effective security service, responding to incidents and emergencies while maintaining a strong focus on customer service and community safety.
Key Responsibilities
Ensure the safety and security of all University users.Act as a first responder to emergencies and incidents.Deliver a friendly, professional front-line service and act as an ambassador for the University.Conduct internal and external patrols across University estates.Manage access control duties, including ID checks, car park control, and static guarding.Operate and monitor CCTV and other security systems.Complete accurate incident reports, logs, and records, maintaining confidentiality in line with GDPR.Lock and unlock campus buildings and manage access securely.Respond to alarms, incidents, security concerns, and health and safety issues.Support emergency evacuations and liaise with emergency services.Handle challenging or distressing situations calmly and professionally.Conduct routine equipment checks and maintain a professional uniform standard.Provide First Aid and Mental Health First Aid in line with training.Respond to emergency call-outs when required.Maintain compliance through mandatory training.Manage lost and found property responsibly.About You
You will have experience in a security role or a position with transferable skills and be confident working in a busy, public-facing environment.
Essential:
Experience in security or a similar role.SIA Security Guarding and/or Door Supervision Licence.Strong decision-making skills and ability to remain calm under pressure.Ability to maintain accurate records.Good knowledge of:GDPRData Protection Act 2018Police and Criminal Evidence Act (PACE 1984)Serious Organised Crime and Police Act (SOCPA 2005)Commitment to following University policies and procedures.Desirable:
NVQ Level 2 in Safety, Security, and Loss Prevention.Public Space Surveillance (CCTV) Licence.Experience operating CCTV systems.Hold a current, clean UK driving licence.What We Offer

The appointed candidate will normally be employed through our subsidiary company BCU Support Services Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of Birmingham City University. Appointees with prior LGPS membership who wish to enter the LGPS scheme will be able to do so and will be employed by Birmingham City University directly.
