Senior Engineer

Job at SSE in Cardiff, Cardiff

Base Location: Reading, Cardiff, London, Glasgow or Perth

Salary: £50,100 - £75,100 and a range of benefits to support your finances, wellbeing and family.

Working Pattern: Permanent | Full Time | Flexible First options available

The role

As a Senior Engineer, you will act as the Design and Technical Authority for electrical distribution networks across operational assets and new-build projects. You will ensure designs meet all relevant legislation, ENA standards, OPN/SSE specifications, and DNO/IDNO interface requirements.

You will play a key role in the governance of network adoption, providing oversight of designs from Independent Connection Providers (ICPs), design houses and internal engineering teams. You will also support the development, maintenance and implementation of OPN/SSE design and construction standards, ensuring compliant and safe connections across LV, HV and where required EHV networks.

This role also supports OPNs obligations as an IDNO under its Distribution Licence, including timely design reviews, stakeholder coordination and maintaining transparent, fair processes under the Competition in Connections framework

You will

Act as the technical authority for electrical network designs, ensuring they are safe, compliant and suitable for long-term operation across low and high voltage systems. Review and approve designs from multiple delivery partners, providing clear, timely decisions and practical guidance that helps projects move forward safely and efficiently. Provide independent technical assurance, identifying risks, constraints and non-compliances early and setting clear actions to resolve them. Work collaboratively with delivery partners and network operators, helping to align designs, manage interfaces and support successful asset adoption. Influence how standards and ways of working evolve, contributing to improved quality, consistency and innovation across future projects

You have

Strong electrical engineering experience in network design, review or assurance across low and high voltage systems, including interfaces between different network owners. Sound technical judgement, with the confidence to make go/no-go decisions in complex or safety-critical situations. The ability to communicate clearly and inclusively, translating complex technical issues into plain English for a wide range of stakeholders. Experience working with standards, legislation and design governance, and applying them pragmatically to real-world projects. A collaborative mindset, valuing different perspectives and approaches, and using them to improve outcomes, productivity and innovation.
