Teaching Associate in Theology and Religion (Fixed term) (ARTS

Job at University of Nottingham in Nottingham, Nottingham, NG7

The Department of Philosophy is looking to appoint a Teaching Associate in Theology and Religion, with expertise in at least one of the following areas: the relationship between philosophy and Christian theology; the sociology of religion in Britain; and interfaith dialogue.

We are inclusive, welcoming, and caring, and pride ourselves on our positive community. Diversity is vital to our success and fundamental to our values, and we want to continue to tackle issues faced by underrepresented groups in Theology and Religion. You will be able to demonstrate an ability to make a positive difference in this regard. We are particularly keen to receive applications from people who are currently underrepresented in the field.

Shortlisting is anonymous (by criteria-based questions rather than CV or letter): we cannot see any personal data or the ‘Additional Information’ section in your application until shortlisting is completed.

About the role:

You will convene and teach our undergraduate Level 1 module ‘Philosophy for Theologians’, which introduces students to a selection of important philosophical ideas, theories, and arguments that are of special interest to students of Christian theology. You will also convene and teach our Level 2 undergraduate module ‘Religion in Britain: Interfaith Encounters in a Secular Age’, which introduces students to key ideas in the sociology of religion through attention to different kinds of interreligious dialogue and partnership.

You will also assess student work in both modules and give feedback. Both modules use coursework essays, but ‘Religion in Britain’ is also assessed using a group podcast and reflective exercise.

Course materials from previous years will be available for both modules. They can be reviewed, edited or adapted to suit your own vision for each module.

You will have an excellent track record of delivering quality teaching to undergraduate students. You will have teaching experience in at least some of the fields of philosophy, theology, sociology of religion and interfaith dialogue. You will be able to demonstrate that you can adapt quickly to teaching new areas. You must have a PhD already awarded (or to be awarded by time of appointment) in an area of Theology and Religion.

The well-being and development of our students is of utmost importance to us, so the successful candidate will take a proactive role in the pastoral support of students. You will also be responsible for a reasonable share of departmental administration, and the ability to collaborate effectively with others is essential. You will be expected to engage in professional development related to teaching and engage with local and national teaching developments.

This post will be offered on a fixed-term, full-time (36.25hrs per week) contract, commencing 13th January 2025 until the 30th June 2025. Job share arrangements may be considered.

Requests for secondment from internal candidates may be considered on the basis that prior agreement has been sought from both your current line manager and the manager of your substantive post, if you are already undertaking a secondment role.

Informal enquiries may be addressed to Dr Craig French, Head of Department, email: [email protected]; please note that applications sent directly to this email address will not be accepted.
