Head of EDI

Job at Royal College of Art in Greater London, SW7

This is an exceptional opportunity for a visionary leader to shape the future of equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) at the world's foremost university for art and design.

Head of Equity, Diversity & Inclusion at the Royal College of Art

The Royal College of Art (RCA) is seeking a dynamic and experienced Head of Equity, Diversity & Inclusion (EDI) to spearhead their commitment to fostering an inclusive, respectful, and intellectually vibrant community. As the RCA approaches its bicentenary, this role is pivotal in embedding inclusive practices across all facets of the institution, from teaching and research to daily operations.

Key Advantages for Candidates:

  • Strategic Leadership: This is a senior role with the opportunity to significantly influence institutional strategy and policy. You will be instrumental in shaping and delivering the RCA's EDI Strategy and Race Equality Charter action plan, impacting thousands of students and staff.
  • Impactful Work: You will directly contribute to creating systemic change by removing barriers to belonging, championing intersectional thinking, and supporting equitable approaches to learning and teaching. Your work will foster a more inclusive and respectful environment for a diverse, global creative community.
  • Academic and Research Focus: The role integrates a unique requirement to maintain a 20% research profile in EDI, belonging, or related fields. This is an excellent opportunity for academics or those with a strong research background to continue their scholarly pursuits while leading impactful initiatives.
  • Collaborative Environment: You will work closely with a broad range of stakeholders, including senior academic leaders, the Director of People & Culture, and student representatives, fostering a truly collaborative approach to EDI.
  • Professional Development: Leading and mentoring the EDI Officers and RCA BLK, as well as acting as senior sponsor for staff and student networks, offers significant opportunities for leadership development and mentorship.
  • Competitive Remuneration and Benefits: The position offers a competitive salary of £64,753–£72,255 per annum (including London Allowance), along with a generous leave allowance, pension scheme, and a supportive benefits package including hybrid working.

Key Considerations for Candidates:

  • Academic and Strategic Depth: The ideal candidate will possess a strong track record in academic leadership within higher education, coupled with demonstrable experience in leading EDI initiatives with measurable cultural impact. A deep understanding of intersectional equality, inclusive pedagogy, belonging, and academic freedom is essential.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Success in this role hinges on the ability to engage confidently and effectively across diverse communities and to influence senior decision-making bodies. Experience in this area is highly valued.
  • Knowledge of Frameworks: Familiarity with key equality frameworks such as the Race Equality Charter (REC), AdvanceHE, and relevant legislation will be a significant asset.
  • Research Component: Candidates should be prepared to dedicate approximately 20% of their time to research in EDI or related areas.
  • Application Process: The application process is unique, focusing on answering six specific questions rather than submitting a traditional CV. Candidates are encouraged to carefully consider how their experience and vision align with the essential criteria.
  • Hybrid Working: The role operates on a hybrid model, requiring 3 days on-site. Candidates should be comfortable with this arrangement, balancing remote work with on-site collaboration at the Kensington and Battersea campuses.

This Head of EDI position at the Royal College of Art is more than just a job; it's a chance to be at the forefront of shaping a more equitable and inclusive future in higher education. If you are a passionate advocate for diversity and possess the strategic acumen to drive meaningful change, this opportunity is for you.
