This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced and motivated Technical Instructor to join the Digitally Aided Making team at the prestigious Royal College of Art (RCA). This fixed-term role, running from January to August 2026, offers a chance to contribute to a vibrant academic environment and support a diverse range of programmes. If you're passionate about digital fabrication and eager to guide aspiring creatives, this position could be a significant step in your career.

Key Advantages for Candidates:

  • Immersive Creative Environment: Work at the heart of a world-renowned art and design institution. You'll be surrounded by innovation and have the opportunity to witness and contribute to cutting-edge creative projects.
  • Diverse Technical Exposure: Gain hands-on experience with a broad spectrum of 2D and 3D digital manufacturing processes, including laser cutting, Zund digital cutting, fiber laser cutting for metals, and CNC milling. This breadth of knowledge is invaluable for developing a comprehensive skillset.
  • Skill Development & Learning: The role emphasizes "continual learning as part of a dynamic team," providing a fantastic environment to stay current with rapidly evolving digital fabrication technologies and methodologies.
  • Impactful Mentorship: Directly assist students and staff in problem-solving and finding technical solutions, playing a crucial role in their academic and creative development. This is a rewarding aspect for those who enjoy teaching and guiding others.
  • Cross-Campus Experience: The position is based across three of the RCA's key campuses (Battersea, Kensington & White City), offering exposure to different facilities and working environments within the college.

Key Considerations for Your Career Path:

  • Fixed-Term Contract: This is a fixed-term role until August 2026. While offering valuable experience, candidates should consider how this fits into their long-term career objectives. It could be an excellent opportunity for gaining specialized experience or a stepping stone to other roles.
  • Technical Proficiency is Crucial: A strong foundation in 2D and 3D digitally aided making processes and at least one specified CAD package (e.g., Adobe Illustrator, Rhino, Fusion360) is essential. Candidates who possess these skills will find this role a natural fit.
  • Instructional Ability: The ability to instruct and demonstrate in a small group context is a core requirement. If you have a passion for teaching and sharing your technical expertise, this role will be particularly fulfilling.
  • Health & Safety Focus: A thorough understanding of Health and Safety issues and Risk Assessment procedures is paramount. This responsibility ensures the safe operation of specialized equipment.
  • Desirable Skills for Enhanced Application: While not mandatory, experience creating online learning materials and a genuine interest in contemporary art, design, and culture would be highly beneficial and could set your application apart.

This role at the Royal College of Art presents a unique chance to enhance your technical expertise, develop your instructional capabilities, and contribute to a world-class creative community. It's an ideal position for individuals seeking to deepen their understanding of digital making within a dynamic academic setting.
