Formulation development is an integral part of R&D, integrating with the other various R&D functions (e.g. CTI, Packaging, Process, S&T) as well as other functions such as Marketing and Supply Chain. We create products that deliver to the consumer needs, with elevating product experiences that delight consumers and cue desired benefits and at the same time drive profitable growth for our Skin Cleansing business. Port Sunlight is part of the UK Global Technical Centre for Personal Care and delivers Skin Cleansing innovation to both Dove International and the Axe (Lynx) brand. This team has the opportunity to take technology from ideation and implementation with a creative, collaborative and entrepreneurial spirit. This role presents an exciting opportunity for someone who is passionate about designing new products to better meet the needs of our consumers and drive profitable growth for our Skin Cleansing business. ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES: Own and drive an area of expertise crucial to the team. Formulation & Processing development is the key capability for this role. We ensure that products we create are effective for our consumers, supply chain and safe for the people and for the planet. We are seeking a passionate, curious & detail-oriented Scientist to join our team. The job holder is expected to lead the formulation & related processing work streams in a variety of projects such as brand innovations, sustainability, materials resilience and 5S. This comprises a range of lab and non-lab-based activities: Using Core Formulation Design delivered from Skin Cleansing category experts to create CUCs to drive outstanding innovations for our brands. Craft superior formulations which align to PC & Skin Cleansing strategy as well as Brand Performance Standards. Work in the Advanced Manufacturing Centre to develop PFD to enable right first-time process delivery to BU and Supply Chain. Prepare or coordinate preparation of product batches at AMC to support the innovation, 5S programs, resilience or sustainability projects. Independently manage formulation and processing activities and their project timelines, embracing all technical elements of the project. Leadership of key technical milestones of the innovation agenda Prepare technical documents to transfer the innovation details to other R&D Business Units teams. Contribute to the ideation process of new formulations, involving connecting with suppliers, other R&D teams and screening relevant technologies. Participate in other activities within the bigger R&D community. Represent the Skin Cleansing formulation & processing work stream in various meetings and forums, (project team meetings, technical discussions within R&D teams, etc.). Coordinate due diligence R&D activities (safety, regulatory clearances, storage tests, patent clearances, etc). Support the general running and coordination of an efficient laboratory including the systems used to operate it. Prepare or coordinate preparation of samples for external testing (e.g. consumer, sensory, microbiological & clinical) Coordinate completion of storage testing of Skin Cleansing products. Ensure all testing is performed in an organised manner, accurately, timely and follows standard safety procedures. Create and maintain material and product specification which involves being fully operational in the available systems (e.g. SAP/PLM & LIMS). Using structured digital data capture in both formulation & processing. Adapt plans at a moment notice to support urgent demands within the team. Report results competently with detail and precision. SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED: Key requirements Qualifications: academic degree in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry or Food (science and technology expertise) or relevant on the job experience. Proven R&D experience in a product design role where a significant part of this experience is in process design (ideally 3+years). Strong understanding of processing and ability to engage with factory teams - Experience of problem-solving processing issues and scale-up. Experience at the PSL AMC and completed training as process controller or Operator. Designing or optimizing process and making batches. Experience of lab scale formula development. Working knowledge of stability and quality tests. Experience in Personal Care R&D is preferred. Experience in end-to-end innovation project technical leadership as a Co-TPL. Good software skills for data analysis and visualisation. Ability to work in multi-disciplinary and multi-cultural teams. Good communication and reporting skills.
