Mechanical Fitter (Southampton, Southampton, GB)

Job at Associated British Ports in Southampton, Southampton

Opportunity Review: Mechanical Technician

This is an exciting opportunity for a skilled Mechanical Technician to join the UK's largest ports operator, a company at the forefront of national trade and economic contribution. With a network of 21 ports, this organization plays a critical role in the nation's economy, handling a significant portion of seaborne trade. The company is committed to embracing the future through business transformation and innovation, making it a dynamic and forward-thinking place to build a career.

Advantages for Candidates:

  • Make a Tangible Impact: You'll be integral to a business that is critical to UK trade, offering a sense of purpose and contribution to a national scale.
  • Thrive in a Growing and Innovative Environment: Become part of an organisation that is actively transforming and embracing new technologies, ensuring a stimulating and progressive work experience.
  • Inclusive Culture: The company champions diversity, talent development, and internal movement, providing an environment where individuals feel respected, can be themselves, and have opportunities for advancement.
  • Comprehensive Benefits Package: Enjoy a competitive salary, a strong pension scheme from day one with excellent company matching, private healthcare, and a generous annual leave entitlement.
  • Investment in Your Development: Benefit from ongoing training opportunities, personal development support, and the chance to pursue further education, fostering continuous learning and skill enhancement.
  • Supportive Management: You'll be part of a team with dedicated management and leadership committed to engagement and employee support.
  • Career Progression: The emphasis on internal movement and talent nurturing provides clear pathways for career growth within the organisation.

Key Considerations for Your Career Path:

  • Essential Experience: A strong mechanical background is crucial, with specific experience in heavy industrial sectors and, ideally, the port industry. Proficiency in working with heavy motor-driven hydraulic equipment is a non-negotiable requirement.
  • Problem-Solving Prowess: This role demands excellent fault-finding capabilities, both in mechanical and ideally some industrial electrical systems. Familiarity with using a Computerised Maintenance Management System (CMMS) is essential.
  • Adaptability and Resilience: You must be comfortable working in a 'live' environment where operations are continuous, and be flexible to accommodate call-out requirements, as you'll be part of a call-out roster.
  • Safety First Mentality: A deep understanding of Health, Safety, and Environmental legislation is paramount. You'll actively contribute to the development and review of risk assessments and safe systems of work.
  • Teamwork and Mentorship: While you will work individually, you'll also be part of a small team and will be expected to support and mentor semi-skilled engineers and apprentices, demonstrating leadership potential.
  • Ideal, but Not Essential: While knowledge of Siemens PLC units, COMPEX, and diesel generator sets are advantageous, they are not prerequisites. However, experience in these areas would significantly strengthen your application.
  • Physical Requirements: Be prepared to work at heights and around water, and hold a full UK Driving Licence.
  • Pre-Employment Screening: Successful candidates will undergo substance abuse screening, a medical examination, and Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS) checks.

This Mechanical Technician role offers a robust platform for a skilled professional to contribute to a vital national infrastructure, while also benefiting from a supportive and developmental work environment. If you possess the required mechanical expertise, a commitment to safety, and an eagerness to grow within a leading UK organization, this could be an excellent next step in your career journey.
