Job at University of Bath in Bath, Bath and North East Somerset, BA2

Explore a Groundbreaking Research Opportunity in Intestinal Homeostasis at the University of Bath

Are you a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher eager to delve into the intricate world of the gut microbiome and host-pathogen interactions? The Department of Life Sciences at the University of Bath, under the guidance of Prof. Edan Foley, presents a compelling opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge research in intestinal homeostasis. This full-time, 24-month fixed-term contract offers a chance to significantly advance our understanding of recently identified BEST4 cells and their crucial roles in the face of inflammatory challenges.

About the Role: Unraveling the Secrets of Intestinal Health

This position centers on investigating the profound effects of commensal and pathogenic bacteria on intestinal balance, utilizing the zebrafish model. A key focus will be on understanding how BEST4 cells, a newly discovered intestinal epithelial cell type with suspected functions in regulating gut pH and mucus hydration, influence host responses to inflammation. While the precise mechanisms are still being uncovered, this role offers the chance to be at the forefront of this discovery.

Your core responsibilities will include:

  • Characterizing BEST4 Cell Function: Investigate the impacts of pro-inflammatory challenges on BEST4 cell behavior in both larval and adult zebrafish.
  • Assessing the Consequences of BEST4 Cell Ablation: Determine how the absence of BEST4 cells affects host responses to intestinal inflammation, providing critical insights into their essential roles.
  • Exploring Transcriptional States: Employ advanced genetic and genomic methodologies to map the transcriptional landscape of BEST4 cells during intestinal inflammation and recovery.

Advantages for Your Career Path:

This postdoctoral position offers several significant advantages for a researcher looking to shape their career:

  • Pioneering Research: You'll be working on a novel and exciting area of research with direct implications for understanding gut health and disease.
  • Model Organism Expertise: Gain or deepen your experience with the zebrafish model, a powerful and versatile tool for studying complex biological processes.
  • Advanced Methodologies: Develop and apply sophisticated genetic, genomic, and bioinformatic techniques, enhancing your skill set for future research endeavors.
  • Mentorship and Collaboration: Work within a supportive research group led by an established scientist, fostering intellectual growth and collaborative opportunities.
  • Publication Potential: The nature of this research provides ample opportunities for high-impact publications in reputable scientific journals.
  • Professional Development: The University of Bath actively encourages professional growth, with a minimum of 10 days of professional development allocated per year.
  • Commitment to Diversity and Inclusion: Join a university that champions diversity and inclusion, with a strong commitment to gender equality and support for under-represented groups, disabled staff, and members of the Armed Forces.
  • Comprehensive Benefits: Benefit from a generous package including free counseling, cycle-to-work schemes, staff discounts, excellent pension contributions, and substantial annual leave.
  • Relocation Support: Assistance with relocation and visa costs may be available, easing the transition for international candidates.

Key Considerations for Potential Candidates:

To excel in this role and make the most of this opportunity, consider the following:

  • Research Background: A PhD or equivalent in a relevant scientific discipline is essential.
  • Model Organism Experience: Prior experience with animal models, particularly in studying intestinal development and homeostasis, will be highly beneficial.
  • Inflammation and Genetic Manipulation: Familiarity with intestinal responses to injury and experience with genetically manipulating hosts are key advantages.
  • Bioinformatics Skills: Proficiency in bioinformatic analysis, especially for characterizing intestinal cell types using fluorescent markers, is a significant asset.
  • Publication Record: A track record of publications in relevant fields demonstrates your research capabilities and potential for impactful contributions.
  • Independent and Collaborative Spirit: While the role involves independent research, the ability to collaborate effectively within a team is crucial.
  • Passion for Discovery: A genuine curiosity and drive to unravel complex biological questions will fuel your success in this dynamic research environment.

This postdoctoral research associate position at the University of Bath offers an exceptional platform for a researcher to make significant contributions to the field of intestinal biology, develop advanced scientific skills, and foster a thriving career in academic research. If you are driven by discovery and eager to tackle challenging scientific questions, this opportunity is well worth exploring.
