Research Fellows in Digital and Electrochemical Engineering

Job at University of Surrey in Guildford, Surrey, GU2

An Exciting Opportunity in Circular Economy Research at the University of Surrey

The University of Surrey presents a compelling opportunity for ambitious researchers to join its distinguished Surrey Circular Economy group. As a globally recognized institution dedicated to life-changing education and groundbreaking research, the University of Surrey is committed to shaping the future and invites passionate individuals to contribute to its bold vision. This role offers the chance to be part of a dynamic and collaborative environment where innovation and a commitment to making a real difference are at the forefront.

The Role: Advancing Digital Tools for a Sustainable Chemical Sector

We are seeking up to two Research Fellows to contribute to the development of cutting-edge digital tools within two significant EPSRC-funded projects: IDEA (Inverse Design of Electrochemical Interfaces with Explainable AI) and C-Circ (Accelerating the Translation of CO2 Electrolysers). This is a unique chance to engage with advanced research at the intersection of chemical engineering, artificial intelligence, and sustainability.

Based within the School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering (SCCE), successful candidates will immerse themselves in an integrated approach that synergizes experimental studies, multi-physics and data-driven modeling, explainable AI, and techno-economic analysis. This holistic methodology is designed to accelerate the transformation of the chemical sector, a major contributor to CO2 emissions, towards improved environmental sustainability.

Key Advantages for Your Career Path:

  • Impactful Research: Contribute to high-profile, externally funded projects (EPSRC) with direct relevance to global sustainability challenges and the advancement of the chemical industry.
  • Interdisciplinary Collaboration: Work within a vibrant research group and collaborate with esteemed partners from other universities and industry leaders, fostering a rich learning and networking environment.
  • Cutting-Edge Methodologies: Gain hands-on experience with state-of-the-art techniques including explainable AI, multi-physics modeling, and data-driven approaches, equipping you with highly sought-after skills.
  • Career Development: The initial 24-month contract, with the possibility of extension, provides a stable foundation for deep engagement and further professional growth.
  • Academic Environment: Be part of a forward-thinking university with a culture that empowers employees to achieve ambitious goals and make a tangible impact.

Key Considerations for Prospective Candidates:

  • Educational Background: A PhD (or nearing completion) in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Computer Science, or a closely related field is essential.
  • Technical Proficiency: Demonstrated experience in developing multi-physics models for electrochemical processes and systems is a core requirement.
  • Software Expertise: Proficiency in commercial modeling software (e.g., ANSYS Fluent) or open-source platforms (e.g., OpenFOAM, Python) is expected.
  • Research Acumen: A strong academic record, evidenced by relevant research experiences and publications, will be crucial for a successful application.

This position is an excellent step for researchers looking to deepen their expertise in digital tools for sustainable technologies and to contribute meaningfully to a critical global challenge. If you are driven by innovation and aspire to work in a leading academic research environment, we encourage you to explore this exciting opportunity.
