Job at University of Sunderland in Sunderland, Tyne and Wear, SR1

The University of Sunderland offers life-changing opportunities for 27,500 students across its campuses in Sunderland, London, Hong Kong, and through global partnerships with learning institutions in 19 countries. We're proud to be a top 30 UK university (Guardian University Guide 2026), with top-quality facilities, inclusive culture, and our vibrant, ever-changing city. The University of Sunderland is in an exciting phase of its development with a new vision and redefined strategic ambitions designed to take advantage of the ever-changing higher education landscape at home and overseas.

The University of Sunderland is in an exciting phase of its development with a new vision and redefined strategic ambitions designed to take advantage of the ever-changing higher education landscape at home and overseas. Our School of Medicine graduated it's first cohort of doctors in 2024, and is currently ranked 6th overall in the UK National Student Survey, and 1st for academic support. This marks a very exciting time for our University, our NHS partners, and the City/Region.

The School of Medicine sits within the Faculty of Health Sciences and Wellbeing (FHSW) which has a track-record of excellence in science and healthcare education spanning almost 100 years, and offers unparalleled opportunities for inter-professional learning (IPL) across our full range of healthcare courses. We are well placed to contribute to the expansion of medical training and help to address the chronic shortage in some medical specialties, including general practice, in the Northeast. We have a significant focus on widening access and will deploy our expertise to ensure we recruit students from the communities they will ultimately serve.

About the role

As Senior Clinical Lecturer: Lead for Inter-Professional Learning, you will lead on the design, organisation, and provision of inter-professional learning and teaching for the MBChB programme. You will work closely with other IPL Leads across the faculty to create and run clinically-focussed, simulation-based, high fidelity inter-professional learning sessions for medical students across all five years of the course. You will also be responsible for implementing the CAIPE quality standards framework.

This part-time role is 0.2 WTE and requires you to be available on campus one day per week. This will usually be either a Monday or Wednesday (according to your preference and clinical commitments), but some flexibility will be needed in order to be available for IPL sessions that occur on other week days. You will be supported as part of the GP Clinical Team, reporting to the Head of Undergraduate GP Teaching, and with support from the Undergraduate Programme Lead as needed.

What you can bring

As a Senior Clinical Lecturer, the successful candidate will be a doctor holding a primary medical qualification (MBChB/MBBS or equivalent), and current GMC registration with a full license to practice in the UK. You will have completed a minimum of two years post-graduate clinical training (e.g. Foundation Programme) and will be in current clinical practice in the NHS in primary and/or secondary care.

You will have current or recent (within the past 5 years) experience of working as part of a clinical team in an acute speciality, providing urgent clinical care to unwell patients in a secondary care environment. You will have significant experience of undergraduate clinical teaching, and a demonstrable interest in pursuing a career in medical education, alongside clinical practice.
