Job at University of Lincoln in Lincoln, Lincolnshire, LN6

## Explore Cutting-Edge Materials Science: Senior Postdoctoral Research Associate Opportunity at the University of Lincoln This is an exciting opportunity for a driven and accomplished postdoctoral researcher to contribute to a significant, Leverhulme Trust-funded International Professorship project focused on the development and impact of Dynamic Functional Materials. Based within the Department of Chemistry at the University of Lincoln, this role offers a chance to work at the forefront of materials science, collaborating with a leading academic and engaging with international partners. ### What This Opportunity Offers: This position presents a compelling proposition for a postdoctoral researcher looking to deepen their expertise and make a tangible impact. Here are some key advantages: * Pioneering Research: You will be at the heart of a project exploring novel crystalline materials with dynamic functionalities. This is an opportunity to contribute to a rapidly evolving field with significant potential applications. * State-of-the-Art Facilities: The Department of Chemistry at the University of Lincoln boasts impressive, internationally leading facilities specifically designed for this research. This includes advanced equipment for synthetic chemistry, comprehensive materials characterisation, and sophisticated functionality studies, particularly in areas of porosity and crystallography. * Interdisciplinary Collaboration: The project encourages collaboration not only within the Department of Chemistry but also with other key research areas across the university, including the Bridge, School of Natural Sciences, and School of Physical Sciences. This broadens your research horizons and fosters a holistic approach to problem-solving. * Focus on Key Research Themes: The programme is structured around critical areas such as the design and preparation of new crystalline materials, in-depth characterisation, the development of novel research tools to understand structure-property relationships, and participation in a diverse network of regional, national, and international collaborators. * Long-Term Project: With a fixed-term appointment of 48 months (4 years), this position offers a substantial period to immerse yourself in the research, develop deep expertise, and contribute meaningfully to a long-term scientific endeavour. * Alignment with University Priorities: The project aligns with the University of Lincoln’s prominent research themes of Sustainability and Net Zero, offering the chance to contribute to solutions for pressing global challenges. * Generous Funding: This position is fully funded by the prestigious Leverhulme Trust, ensuring access to the resources needed to conduct high-impact research. ### Key Considerations for Your Career Path: To help you assess if this role aligns with your career aspirations, consider the following: * Required Expertise: The role demands a strong foundation in chemistry, with a PhD already obtained or in the process of completion. Crucially, candidates will need to demonstrate expertise that bridges several of the following areas:

  • Organic synthesis
  • Preparation of porous molecular crystals, covalent organic frameworks, or metal-organic frameworks
  • X-ray crystallography (both single-crystal and powder)
  • In situ variable-pressure crystallography
  • Supramolecular chemistry and crystal engineering (including concepts like polymorphism, co-crystals, solvates, inclusion compounds, phase transitions, and packing analysis)
  • Gas/vapour sorption analysis (manometric or gravimetric sorption analysis, breakthrough analysis)
  • BET measurements
  • Mechanical testing of crystals
  • Preparation of gel composites
  • Thermal analysis (thermogravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry)
  • Microscopy (SEM, AFM)
  • Crystal engineering of chemical sensors
  • Development of new characterisation tools
Note: While a comprehensive skillset is beneficial, the description highlights that specific expertise combining several of these areas will be critical. Carefully review the list to identify where your strengths lie and how they align with the project's needs. * Research Impact and Dissemination: The project emphasises developing new research tools and engaging with a broad network of collaborators. This suggests a strong focus on generating high-impact publications and presenting findings at national and international forums. * Career Development: Working under the guidance of Professor Len Barbour, a prominent researcher in the field, and within a well-equipped department, provides an excellent environment for continued professional development and the honing of specialised skills. The collaborative nature of the project also offers opportunities for networking and building a strong professional reputation. This Senior Postdoctoral Research Associate position is a remarkable opportunity for a dedicated scientist eager to contribute to the advancement of dynamic functional materials. If you possess the requisite skills and a passion for innovative research, this role at the University of Lincoln offers a challenging yet highly rewarding career step.
