The role As a Senior Safety Engineer , you’ll have a role that’s out of the ordinary. The main purpose of the role is the provision of Safety and Environmental management for all Babcock UKME Submarine tasking. You will join a national team of over eight hundred engineers and designers within the Marine Sector of Babcock. We are a leading design consultancy providing naval architecture, marine system engineering, electrical engineering, design modelling and project support services to the marine and defence markets.

Day to day, the Senior Safety Engineer will be involved with:

Product Assurance (Safety & Environmental Assessments / Reports) for In-Service Submarine (ISM) design change Alterations and Additions (A&A’s), Class Modifications (CMs) and Minor Trials (MTs). Submarine Systems Design Safety Justifications (DSJs). In-Service Submarines (ISM) High Level Hazard (HLH) Management Coordination. General safety advice/steerage and support to CE (Submarine Design). Safety Advice and support to the Laid-up Submarine (LUSM) Project and Waterfront Organisation. Provide expertise and support in own engineering specialisation to other members of the safety team, and other Babcock Business Units (BUs) as required.

This role is a full time position and will consist of a 36 hour working week. It will be based out of Devonport with flexible and hybrid working arrangements.

Agile working may be available to employees in some instances, applying the principles of fairness and consistency whilst ensuring that the overriding business needs can be appropriately met. Experience of the Senior Safety Engineer

Extensive engineering background in Royal Navy Submarine Platforms. Experience with safety and environmental management techniques for PSS onboard Royal Navy Submarine Platforms (desirable). Knowledge of MOD HS&EP Policy, ASEMS, POSMS, POEMS, DSA 01, and DSA 02. Familiarity with ISM High Level Hazard Management process. Understanding of Defence Standards and JSPs (e.g., 00-056). Excellent technical report writing, facilitation, and recording skills.

Qualifications for the Senior Safety Engineer Submarine

Ideally degree qualified but HND/HNC level qualification in an engineering discipline with extensive experience in relevant field will be considered. Ideally, hold the Defence Maritime Regulator’s (DMR) Ship Safety & Environmental Management Training (SEMT) or Ship Safety Management Office (SSMO) Certificate. Ideally you will be a member of a relevant institution (e.g., IEMA, IMechE, RINA, IET, SARS etc.) and hold Chartered or Incorporated status (or be working towards).

Security Clearance The successful candidate must be able to achieve and maintain Security Check (SC) security clearance for this role.
