Job at SSE in Greater London

Career Opportunity: Electrical Fitter with SSE - Powering a Sustainable Future

Are you an experienced Electrical Fitter looking to join a company at the forefront of the energy transition? Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) Distribution, a vital part of SSE, is seeking dedicated professionals to contribute to powering millions of homes and businesses across central southern England and the North of Scotland. This is a fantastic opportunity to be part of a forward-thinking organisation committed to a net-zero future.

The Role:

As an Electrical Fitter, you will play a crucial role in ensuring the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of the electricity network. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Inspecting, maintaining, and operating a range of electrical equipment, with a specific focus on the 132kV system.
  • Working with essential components such as switchgear, transformers, busbars, isolators, and protection systems.
  • Completing maintenance tasks and resolving defects efficiently to restore the network to normal operation quickly.
  • Responding effectively to emergency fault scenarios.
  • Actively participating in maintenance projects, adhering to key performance indicators (KPIs) and ensuring all plant and equipment operates within specified limits.
  • Supporting planned and unplanned switching activities, including network isolation and restoration.
  • Contributing to the detailed planning and execution of works.
  • Representing SSEN professionally when interacting with internal and external stakeholders, including National Grid and power stations, delivering exceptional customer service.
  • Maintaining an unwavering commitment to safety, adhering to all SSE policies and procedures.

Key Advantages for Candidates:

This role offers several compelling advantages for career development and personal well-being:

  • Competitive Salary & Potential for Growth: The base salary ranges from £29,504 to £34,757. Crucially, this role offers significant earning potential for those with additional authorisations. Qualified Electrical Fitters can earn up to £40,939, with further opportunities reaching up to £57,728 for those holding higher-level SAP PTWs (SS05, SS06, SS07). This provides a clear and rewarding career progression path.
  • Comprehensive Benefits Package: Beyond salary, SSE provides a robust benefits package designed to support your lifestyle, finances, and wellbeing. This includes a London weighting allowance for those based in Slough/London, full provision of PPE and tools, access to a company van, and extensive training provided by SSE.
  • Investment in Your Future: SSE is committed to the professional development of its employees, offering valuable training and opportunities to gain essential authorisations.
  • Impactful Work: You will be contributing to a critical piece of national infrastructure, ensuring millions of homes and businesses have a reliable supply of electricity.
  • Commitment to Sustainability: Join a company with a clear vision for a net-zero future, actively investing in renewable energy and transforming the grid for greener electricity.
  • Wellbeing Support: Access a range of flexible benefits including discounts on private healthcare and gym memberships, a free online GP, 24/7 counselling services, and schemes like Cycle to Work.
  • Family Support: Generous family entitlements such as maternity and adoption pay, and paternity leave demonstrate SSE's commitment to supporting employees' personal lives.

Key Considerations for Your Career Path:

To make the most of this opportunity, consider the following:

  • Experience is Valued: While not strictly mandatory for all roles, previous experience as an Electrical Fitter across 11kV and 33kV systems, or experience and authorisations to work on the electrical distribution network, would be highly advantageous. If your experience is outside of a DNO, a strong foundation in electrical or mechanical work and a high regard for safety are essential.
  • Safety First: An unwavering commitment to safety is paramount. You will be expected to rigorously follow all SSE policies and procedures in every task.
  • Customer Focus: Excellent communication and customer service skills are vital, as you will be interacting with customers face-to-face on a daily basis.
  • Mobility: A full UK driving licence is a requirement for this role, indicating the need for regular site visits and travel.
  • Career Progression: Actively pursue and obtain the necessary authorisations (SAP PTWs) to unlock the higher salary brackets and advance your career within SSEN Distribution.

This is an exceptional opportunity for a skilled Electrical Fitter to join a leading energy company, contribute to a sustainable future, and benefit from a rewarding career path with excellent benefits. If you are passionate about engineering and eager to make a tangible difference, explore this exciting role with SSE.
