Birmingham City University (BCU) presents a compelling opportunity for a dedicated Academic Skills Tutor (Maths) to join its dynamic and newly established Academic Skills Team, nestled within the Library & Learning Resources department. This role is ideal for individuals with a background in learner development, teaching, or coaching, who possess a genuine passion for student success and demonstrable experience in providing academic support, specifically within the realms of mathematics and statistics.

As a valued member of a focused team supporting the School of Architecture, Built Environment, Computing and Engineering, you will be instrumental in fostering students' academic achievements and nurturing their capacity for lifelong learning. Your contribution will involve building student confidence through the development and delivery of essential academic skills, with a strong emphasis on maths and stats.

Key Responsibilities and Opportunities:

  • Specialist Support Delivery: Provide tailored and expert assistance to students across a spectrum of academic skills, with a particular focus on mathematics and statistics.
  • Engaging Instruction: Design and deliver impactful embedded teaching sessions, interactive group workshops, and individual one-to-one support.
  • Resource Development: Create accessible and engaging learning materials that enhance student understanding and retention.
  • Collaborative Alignment: Work closely with Academic Skills Managers and Library Business Partners to ensure academic support services are seamlessly integrated with course and subject requirements.
  • Service Enhancement: Actively contribute to the evaluation and continuous improvement of academic support offerings, driving excellence in service delivery.

  • Proven experience in delivering academic skills support, with a specific emphasis on mathematics and statistics.
  • Proficiency in designing and delivering engaging group workshops, one-to-one sessions, and online learning resources.
  • A strong ability to support students with diverse learning needs, empowering them to become independent learners.
  • The capacity to thrive both autonomously and as an integral part of a collaborative team.
  • Excellent organisational skills, including the ability to prioritise tasks, manage multiple responsibilities effectively, and maintain accurate student progress records.
  • A deep commitment to promoting accessibility, fostering student success, and driving continuous improvement in academic support services.
