Advantages for Potential Candidates:

  • Diverse & Engaging Work: This role offers a dynamic work environment where you'll tackle a wide array of maintenance and repair tasks, encompassing carpentry, decoration, wet trades (including basic electrical), and general building upkeep. No two days will be the same as you contribute to ensuring our campuses are safe, efficient, and conducive to learning and working.

  • Work-Life Balance Focus: While a call-out rota is a requirement for emergency situations, the University also offers options for flexible working and excellent family leave arrangements, demonstrating a commitment to supporting your personal life.
  • Supportive & Inclusive Environment: Join an institution that champions equality, diversity, and inclusion. The University of Southampton is a Stonewall Diversity Champion and holds Athena SWAN and Race Equality Charter awards, reflecting a deep commitment to creating a welcoming and equitable workplace for all. Your unique background and experiences are valued here.
  • Vibrant Campus Life: Be part of a lively academic environment with access to a wide variety of on and off-campus arts and culture facilities, as well as staff discounts and offers at local establishments, enriching your overall experience.

Key Considerations for Your Career Path:

  • Essential Trade Expertise: This role requires a solid foundation in building trades. You must possess a recognised trade qualification (NVQ Level 3 or equivalent) in disciplines such as Decorating, Bricklaying, Roofing, Plastering, or Carpentry, with proven experience across multiple trades. Experience in commercial or public environments is highly beneficial.
  • Proactive Problem-Solver: The ability to diagnose and troubleshoot faults effectively is crucial. A proactive approach to maintenance and a keen eye for detail will ensure minimal disruption to campus operations.
  • Responsibility & Reliability: This position involves responding to emergency maintenance issues, which may include out-of-hours support. A commitment to upholding high standards of health and safety and adherence to all relevant regulations are paramount.
  • Collaboration & Communication: You'll work closely with other trade teams and external contractors, as well as internal stakeholders. Strong communication skills are therefore essential for effective collaboration and coordination.
  • Driving Requirement: A valid full UK driver's license is essential for this role, facilitating movement across campus and for attending to various sites.
  • Desirable Experience: While not mandatory, prior experience working within a university, hospital, or large campus environment would be advantageous, providing valuable context for the specific demands of this role.
