## A Deep Dive into the Principal Supportability Engineer Role at Babcock Are you a seasoned engineer with a passion for shaping the future of complex defence programmes? Babcock International is seeking a highly motivated **Principal Supportability Engineer** to join their esteemed team, offering a truly out-of-the-ordinary career opportunity. This review aims to illuminate the advantages and key considerations of this role, helping you navigate your career path and determine if this position aligns with your professional aspirations.

This permanent, full-time role is based in either Stoke Gifford, Bristol or Plymouth, Devon, with the added benefit of hybrid working arrangements. This means you'll enjoy a blend of in-office collaboration and the flexibility of working from home, fostering a healthy work-life balance. The compensation package ranges from £59,110 to £61,110, dependent on your experience, alongside a comprehensive benefits package.

What Makes This Opportunity Stand Out?

As a Principal Supportability Engineer, you will be at the forefront of developing and delivering **Integrated Product Support (IPS)** solutions across significant defence programmes. This isn't just a technical role; it's a leadership opportunity where you'll champion the integration of critical support elements throughout the entire product lifecycle. Imagine playing a pivotal role in ensuring the long-term effectiveness and maintainability of vital defence assets.

Key Responsibilities and Growth Areas:

  • Team Leadership and Mentorship: You will have the opportunity to manage and coach a team of IPS Leads and specialists. This is a chance to hone your leadership skills, share your expertise, and foster the development of future talent within the organisation.
  • Strategic Integration: Champion the seamless integration of core IPS components, including Maintenance, Training, Supply Support, and Technical Data, directly into the product lifecycle. This proactive approach ensures supportability is a foundational element, not an afterthought.
  • Financial and Risk Management: Take on the responsibility of a Cost Account Manager (CAM), overseeing labour demand, spend, and providing crucial risk reporting. This offers valuable experience in project financial management and strategic decision-making.
  • Business Growth and Innovation: Contribute directly to Babcock's continued success by leveraging lessons learned, actively participating in bid activities, and driving capability development. Your insights will shape the future of the business.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: The role necessitates travel and collaboration across a range of internal and customer sites. This exposure will broaden your understanding of the defence landscape and enhance your ability to work effectively with diverse stakeholders.

Essential Experience and Qualifications:

Babcock is seeking candidates who can demonstrate:

  • Proven experience in developing robust Integrated Product Support (IPS) solutions.
  • Strong analytical skills to dissect complex technical issues and devise effective solutions.
  • Experience in leading or significantly contributing to technical investigations and driving continuous improvement initiatives.
  • A natural ability to guide and mentor team members, fostering a collaborative and high-performing environment.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the proficiency to liaise effectively across various disciplines.
  • An Engineering degree (or equivalent qualification) in a relevant discipline, complemented by demonstrable experience.
  • Ideally, you will be a Chartered Engineer or actively working towards achieving chartership, showcasing your commitment to professional excellence.

Important Considerations for Candidates:

  • Security Clearance: This role requires the successful candidate to achieve and maintain Security Check (SC) security clearance. Please be aware that eligibility for this clearance is influenced by factors such as place of birth, nationality, and residency. Candidates are encouraged to familiarise themselves with the UK government's guidance on security vetting.
  • Travel: As mentioned, the role involves travel to various internal and customer sites.
  • Hybrid Working: While offering flexibility, the hybrid model requires 2 days per week in the office/onsite.

Babcock International is committed to supporting its employees' well-being and professional growth. Beyond the competitive salary, you can expect:

  • A generous holiday allowance.
  • A matched contribution pension scheme with life assurance.
  • Comprehensive health and well-being support through Aviva DigiCare+, including a Digital GP, annual health checks, and nutritional consultations.
  • An employee share scheme and access to a shopping savings portal.
  • Payment of professional fees to support your ongoing development.
