Job at University of Bath in Bath, Bath and North East Somerset, BA2

Career Opportunity: Large-scale universal behaviour of the Ising model

This role presents an exceptional opportunity for ambitious researchers to delve into the fascinating world of theoretical physics, specifically focusing on the "Large-scale universal behaviour of the Ising model". As a researcher within the esteemed Prob-L@B group at the University of Bath, you'll be immersed in a vibrant academic environment conducive to groundbreaking discoveries and professional growth.

What the Role Offers:

  • Impactful Research: Lead and contribute to significant research projects, with a primary focus on the Ising model, offering the chance to shape understanding in this critical area of statistical physics.
  • Collaborative Environment: Join a dynamic research group of 12 permanent academic staff, 3 postdocs, and around 12 PhD students. This provides a rich ecosystem for knowledge exchange, mentorship, and collaborative ventures.
  • Intellectual Stimulation: Benefit from regular weekly seminars, reading groups, and graduate courses, ensuring continuous learning and exposure to cutting-edge ideas.
  • Research Freedom: While a core project is defined, you'll be actively encouraged to explore and initiate new research directions, fostering innovation and personal research interests.
  • Publication Potential: The role strongly emphasizes the expectation and support for publishing in high-quality academic journals, a crucial step for career advancement.
  • Professional Development: As a member of the Research Staff, you are guaranteed a minimum of 10 days of professional development per year, pro rata, supporting your continuous learning and skill enhancement.
  • Fixed-Term Contract: A 24-month fixed-term position, offering a dedicated period to concentrate on research and achieve significant project milestones, with a start date between 1 May 2026 and 1 September 2026.

Key Considerations for Potential Candidates:

  • Academic Foundation: A PhD in probability or a closely related discipline is essential. Candidates should demonstrate a strong theoretical background and a passion for quantitative research.
  • Research Alignment: While the Ising model is central, a genuine interest in related areas such as percolation, self-avoiding walks, and statistical physics more broadly will be highly advantageous. Demonstrating alignment with the research interests of Christoforos Panagiotis is key.
  • Initiative and Collaboration: The role thrives on individuals who can both independently pursue research avenues and actively seek out collaborations, both within the Prob-L@B group and potentially beyond.
  • Ambition for Impact: Candidates should possess the drive and capability to contribute original research that garners recognition in leading academic journals.
  • Career Progression: For exceptional candidates who may not yet meet the full requirements for the Grade 7 position, a Grade 6 Research Assistant role may be offered with a clear pathway for advancement upon successful completion of a PhD.

The University of Bath is committed to fostering a diverse and inclusive environment. They actively encourage applications from individuals of all genders, backgrounds, and communities, particularly those from under-represented groups. Their commitment to equality, diversity, and inclusion is reflected in their Silver Athena SWAN award and their status as an accredited Disability Confident Leader and autism-friendly university.

This is an exciting prospect for researchers looking to make a significant contribution to their field within a supportive and intellectually stimulating setting. If you are driven, possess a strong academic record in probability or a related field, and are eager to push the boundaries of theoretical physics, we encourage you to explore this opportunity.
