Job at University of Southampton in Southampton, Southampton, SO17

Research Fellow Opportunity at the Optoelectronics Research Centre (ORC)

The Optoelectronics Research Centre (ORC) at the University of Southampton, a globally recognized leader in photonics research, is seeking a talented Research Fellow to join its vibrant and collaborative team. With over 300 staff and students, the ORC is at the forefront of innovation, driving real-world impact across a diverse range of fields including quantum technologies, communication, healthcare, and renewable energy.

This is an exceptional opportunity for an ambitious researcher to contribute to a significant EPSRC-funded project focused on developing and producing advanced optoelectronic devices. You will play a pivotal role in creating the world's lowest-loss on-chip optical resonators, pushing the boundaries of integrated optical sensors, laser optics, and quantum technologies.

Key Advantages for Candidates:

  • World-Class Research Environment: Become part of an internationally acclaimed research centre with a strong track record of groundbreaking discoveries and impactful contributions.
  • Cutting-Edge Project: Engage in a high-profile, EPSRC-funded project that is at the forefront of optoelectronics innovation. You will be instrumental in developing state-of-the-art devices.
  • Collaborative International Partnerships: Work closely with leading researchers at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech), fostering invaluable international connections and gaining exposure to diverse research perspectives. This includes opportunities for inter-institute visits.
  • Tangible Impact and Commercialization Potential: Contribute to translating cutting-edge research into tangible innovations that will benefit the UK's growing photonics sector. The role encourages the investigation of commercialization pathways for your outputs.
  • Hands-On Experience with Advanced Equipment: Gain extensive experience operating and maintaining state-of-the-art fabrication and characterization equipment, essential for a career in advanced materials and photonics.
  • Skill Development in Diverse Areas: The role offers opportunities to develop expertise in optical fabrication (including flame hydrolysis deposition), microelectronics and optical fibre fabrication, waveguide design, optical characterization, and material science.
  • Mentorship and Training Opportunities: Contribute to the growth of future researchers by training and supporting PhD students, enhancing your leadership and communication skills.
  • Career Progression: For those working towards their PhD, this role offers a clear pathway to becoming a Research Fellow upon successful completion of their qualification, starting as a Senior Research Assistant.

Key Considerations for Candidates:

  • Required Qualifications: A PhD or equivalent professional qualification in a relevant field is essential. Applications from candidates who are nearing completion of their PhD will also be considered.
  • Specialized Expertise: Strong backgrounds in optical material sciences (especially glass science), optical fibre, cleanroom fabrication, optics, lasers, and photonics are highly sought after.
  • Self-Motivation and Independence: The role requires a self-motivated researcher with excellent experimental skills who can conduct research both independently and collaboratively.
  • ATAS Certificate Requirement: Due to the nature of the research, candidates must be exempt from or eligible for an ATAS certificate. Further details can be found on the UK government's guidance website.
  • Fixed-Term Contract: This is a fixed-term position until 31st October 2028, with an anticipated start as soon as possible.
  • Salary Band: The salary range for this position is £36,130 to £44,128 per annum.

This Research Fellow position represents a significant opportunity to advance your career within a world-leading research environment, contribute to impactful scientific advancements, and forge valuable international collaborations. If you are a driven and skilled researcher looking to make a tangible difference in the field of optoelectronics, we encourage you to apply.
