Job at University of East London in Greater London, E16

The University of East London (UEL) is embarking on an exciting expansion of its social prescribing initiative, seeking passionate individuals to join their dynamic Student Services team. This role presents a compelling opportunity for those dedicated to enhancing student wellbeing and fostering a supportive university environment.

About the Opportunity:

This position is central to UEL's innovative "Beyond Talking" project, aiming to significantly broaden the university's social prescribing offer. You will play a pivotal role in connecting students with both university and community-based resources that promote their holistic health and wellbeing. The role has a strategic focus on increasing engagement among male undergraduate and mature students, while also ensuring the accessibility and sustainability of existing support groups. A key aspect of this role involves building and nurturing relationships with a wide array of partners, including internal departments like SportsDock, Chaplaincy, Students Union, and Student Life teams, as well as external community organizations. Developing a comprehensive map of available activities and services will be crucial to the success of this endeavor.

Key Advantages for Potential Candidates:

  • Impactful Role: Directly contribute to the wellbeing and success of a diverse student population, making a tangible difference in their lives.
  • Career Growth in a Developing Field: This is an opportunity to be at the forefront of social prescribing within a university setting, a rapidly growing and important area of student support. UEL is committed to supporting your professional development, offering a Level 3 qualification in Social Prescribing if not already attained.
  • Collaborative Environment: Work within a multi-disciplinary team that values partnership and cross-departmental collaboration to achieve student success.
  • Innovation and Creativity: UEL encourages forward-thinking and innovative approaches. You'll have the space to develop creative ideas and implement new initiatives.
  • Comprehensive Benefits Package: Beyond a competitive salary, UEL offers an attractive benefits package including a generous pension scheme, ample holiday allowance, hybrid working options, and a wide range of discounts on lifestyle and leisure activities.
  • Commitment to Inclusivity: UEL is a proud advocate for Equality, Diversity, and Inclusivity, fostering a welcoming and supportive culture for all.

Key Considerations for Your Career Path:

  • Experience Alignment: While prior experience in social prescribing or a link worker role within education, health, or community settings is ideal, a strong aptitude for person-centered work and a commitment to developing these skills will be highly valued.
  • Interpersonal and Communication Skills: The role demands excellent communication, influencing, and motivational abilities, with proficiency in techniques such as motivational interviewing, coaching, or goal setting being beneficial.
  • Proactive and Asset-Based Approach: A willingness to work with an asset-based approach, identifying and leveraging existing community and personal strengths, is essential.
  • Risk Management and Safeguarding: A robust understanding of safeguarding principles and the ability to recognize and manage risk effectively are critical components of this role.
  • Passion for Student Wellbeing: A genuine commitment to improving student mental health, reducing isolation, and enhancing overall health and wellbeing is paramount.

This role is an exceptional chance to advance your career within a forward-thinking educational institution committed to changing lives. If you are driven by a desire to support and empower students, and you thrive in a collaborative and innovative environment, this opportunity at the University of East London could be the perfect next step for you.
