Opportunity Review: Contract Manager with SSE - Procurement & Commercial Team

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced Contract Manager to join SSE's Procurement and Commercial (P&C) team. Supporting the SSEN Large Capital Delivery Directorate, this role is integral to the successful delivery of complex, large-scale capital projects. If you are a commercially astute professional looking to make a significant impact within a forward-thinking energy company, this position warrants your close attention.

Key Advantages for Candidates:

  • Impactful Projects: You will be involved in managing the procurement and commercial aspects of substantial capital projects, contributing directly to SSE's ambitious net-zero goals. This offers a chance to work on projects with real-world significance.
  • Comprehensive Benefits Package: SSE offers a competitive salary commensurate with experience, a car allowance, and a performance-related bonus. Beyond this, a robust range of benefits is available to support your family, finances, and overall wellbeing, including discounts on healthcare and gym memberships, a free online GP, and generous family leave entitlements.
  • Career Development: This role provides a platform to hone your skills in pre and post-contract procurement, commercial management, and stakeholder engagement. The experience gained managing complex contracts and potentially supervising commercial staff will be invaluable for your career progression.
  • Flexible Working: With "Flexible First" options available and a focus on a full-time, fixed-term contract of 18 months, this role offers a degree of flexibility while providing a defined period of engagement.
  • Location Flexibility: The role is based in the Reading / Thames Valley / Wiltshire / Hampshire region, offering a choice of operational hubs.

Key Considerations for Your Career Path:

  • Contract Duration: The position is a fixed-term contract for 18 months. While this offers a clear timeframe, candidates should consider how this fits into their long-term career strategy. It could be an excellent opportunity to gain intensive experience in a specific project phase or to explore a new sector.
  • Regulatory Knowledge: A strong understanding of the Utilities Contract Regulations 2016 and the Procurement Act 2023 is essential. Candidates will need to demonstrate this knowledge or be prepared to quickly immerse themselves in these critical legal frameworks.
  • Contractual Expertise: Experience with drafting, interpreting, and managing commercial contracts, including a knowledge of Standard Form construction contracts and bespoke arrangements, is a core requirement. Specific experience with NEC Contracts is highly desirable.
  • Stakeholder Management: The role necessitates providing a "world-class procurement and commercial service to internal stakeholders." This highlights the importance of strong communication, collaboration, and influencing skills.
  • Commercial Acumen: Beyond contract management, the role demands involvement in cost estimating, forecasting, sourcing management, and budget management, emphasizing the need for a broad commercial understanding and a focus on achieving the lowest cost of ownership while ensuring efficiency and best value.

SSE's commitment to a net-zero future and its significant investments in renewable energy make this a compelling opportunity for professionals who wish to contribute to a more sustainable world. This Contract Manager role offers a chance to apply your expertise within a dynamic and rapidly evolving industry, with a comprehensive support system to ensure your success.
