Research Fellow in (Exo)Planetary Climate Modelling WF)

Job at University of Southampton in Southampton, Southampton, SO17

Postdoctoral Researcher (Exo)Planetary Climate Modelling - University of Southampton

This is an exceptional opportunity for a motivated and skilled Postdoctoral Researcher to join a groundbreaking initiative at the University of Southampton. Dr. João M. Mendonça's newly established research group is at the forefront of developing an innovative class of 3D climate models, named OASIS. This project promises to redefine our understanding of planetary atmospheres and climates, from our own Solar System to the furthest exoplanets. If you are passionate about pushing the boundaries of climate science and computational modelling, this position is designed for you.

The core of this role involves the significant development and enhancement of the OASIS model. This is a chance to contribute to cutting-edge research by:

  • Developing new physical parameterisations that capture complex atmospheric processes.
  • Designing and implementing novel numerical algorithms for advanced simulations.
  • Focusing on performance optimisation to enable unprecedented computational capabilities.

Beyond model development, you will have the exciting responsibility of applying these advanced tools to tackle fundamental questions in (exo)planetary science. This is where your research vision truly comes to life, using the OASIS model to explore uncharted territories of scientific inquiry.

Advantages for Your Career Path:

  • Pioneering Research: Be an integral part of developing a novel climate model that aims to overcome current limitations, positioning you at the vanguard of the field.
  • Broad Scientific Impact: Your work will have applications across Earth science, Solar System exploration, and exoplanet research, offering diverse and exciting avenues for future investigation.
  • International Collaboration: Engage with leading researchers through dedicated funding for professional travel, including potential research visits to esteemed institutions like UCL and Caltech.
  • Independent Research: The three-year appointment provides a valuable window to pursue your own independent research projects that align with the group's ambitious goals, fostering your autonomy and scientific leadership.
  • Skill Development: This role will significantly enhance your expertise in climate modelling, atmospheric physics, numerical methods, and computational science, making you a highly sought-after researcher.

Key Considerations for Candidates:

  • Interdisciplinary Background: While a background in (exo)planetary climate science is ideal, the group strongly welcomes candidates with expertise in atmospheric physics, applied mathematics, or computer science. This suggests a collaborative environment where diverse skill sets are valued.
  • Model Development Focus: A significant portion of this role involves hands-on code development and improvement. Candidates with a strong inclination towards computational work and algorithm design will find this particularly rewarding.
  • Academic Rigour: The position requires a PhD or equivalent qualifications/experience. A strong research statement and a comprehensive CV are crucial for showcasing your suitability and vision.
  • Long-Term Project: This is a three-year, full-time position, offering a substantial period to make a deep impact and develop your research profile within the project.
  • Flexible Start Date: While the ideal start is between September and December 2026, there is some flexibility, allowing for planning and smooth transitions.

This Postdoctoral Researcher position represents a remarkable opportunity to contribute to a paradigm-shifting research project. If you are driven by scientific curiosity, possess strong computational skills, and are eager to make a significant contribution to our understanding of planetary climates, we encourage you to apply.
