Research Fellow in Supramolecular Chemistry EB)

Job at University of Southampton in Southampton, Southampton, SO17

Postdoctoral Research Fellow: Pioneering Precision Therapeutics

This is an exceptional opportunity for a highly motivated Postdoctoral Research Fellow to contribute to a groundbreaking, EPSRC-funded project focused on developing novel photoswitchable anionophores for therapeutic applications. Working within the dynamic Williams group, you will play a key role in advancing next-generation precision therapeutics designed to combat hard-to-treat cancers.

This project offers a unique interdisciplinary environment, bridging the fields of supramolecular chemistry and biomedicine. You will engage in a multifaceted research approach, integrating organic synthesis, sophisticated photophysical characterisation, and advanced biological techniques. This role is ideally suited for individuals with a PhD in organic chemistry and/or supramolecular chemistry, or those nearing completion.

Key Advantages for Your Career Path:

  • Cutting-Edge Research: Be at the forefront of innovation in developing novel therapeutic agents with significant potential to impact cancer treatment.
  • Interdisciplinary Collaboration: Immerse yourself in a vibrant research ecosystem at the intersection of chemistry and medicine, fostering broad scientific understanding.
  • Skill Development: While experience in supramolecular chemistry, vesicle-based assays, DFT calculations, photophysical characterisation, and/or cell biology is highly advantageous, the project boasts a substantial training budget. This ensures dedicated support for your professional growth and the acquisition of new skills.
  • Mentorship and Leadership: As a senior member of the lab, you will have the valuable opportunity to mentor junior researchers, honing your leadership and supervisory abilities.
  • Career Advancement Support: Benefit from dedicated support from your supervisor and the department to explore and secure independent fellowship funding, a crucial step for advancing your academic career.
  • Flexible Working Arrangements: The position offers flexibility, with consideration for part-time working and adaptable arrangements, alongside a negotiable start date.

Key Considerations for Potential Candidates:

  • Required Background: A PhD in organic chemistry and/or supramolecular chemistry is a prerequisite.
  • Project Scope: The project demands a strong foundation or willingness to develop expertise across multiple disciplines, including synthesis, physical characterisation, and biological assays.
  • Fixed-Term Contract: The position is offered on a 36-month fixed-term basis, with the successful candidate expected to pass probationary requirements.
  • Application Process: Candidates are required to submit a CV and a cover letter that clearly articulates how their skills and experience align with the project's requirements.

This Postdoctoral Research Fellow position represents a significant opportunity to contribute to impactful research, develop a broad skill set, and take meaningful steps in your academic career. If you are a passionate and driven scientist seeking to make a difference in therapeutic development, we encourage you to explore this exciting prospect.
