Review: Assistant Project Manager - Eastern Green Link 2 (EGL2) Project

This is an exciting opportunity for an ambitious Assistant Project Manager to join SSEN Transmission on what is set to be the UK transmission business's largest ever infrastructure project, the Eastern Green Link 2 (EGL2). This role offers a chance to contribute to a critical national energy initiative with significant long-term impact.

Key Advantages for Candidates:

  • Impactful Project: The EGL2 project is a flagship initiative focused on building vital HVDC converter stations and subsea cables. Working on this project provides an unparalleled chance to gain experience on a project of national significance, directly contributing to the UK's energy transition and net-zero ambitions.
  • Career Development: Reporting to an HVDC Project Manager, you'll gain hands-on experience managing budgets, leading multi-disciplinary teams, and navigating complex project interfaces. This role is an excellent stepping stone for those looking to advance their careers in large-scale infrastructure project management.
  • Competitive Compensation and Benefits: The advertised salary range of £35,200 - £52,800 is complemented by a car or car allowance, a performance-related bonus, and a comprehensive benefits package. This includes financial, wellbeing, and family support, demonstrating SSE's commitment to its employees' holistic welfare.
  • Flexible Working: SSEN Transmission embraces a "Flexible First" approach, offering permanent, full-time roles with options that cater to various working styles. This allows for a better work-life integration.
  • Location Options: The role offers flexibility with base locations across key Scottish cities: Glasgow, Perth, Aberdeen, and Inverness. This provides candidates with regional choices within Scotland.
  • Diverse Project Scope: The role specifically involves managing the construction scope for the Peterhead Converter Station. This offers a focused yet substantial area of responsibility within the larger EGL2 project.

Key Considerations for Candidates:

  • Project Lifecycle Experience: While direct experience with HVDC projects isn't explicitly required, candidates are expected to possess experience across the project lifecycle, including design phases. Demonstrating an ability to develop optimal project solutions and manage multiple projects simultaneously will be crucial.
  • Contractual Knowledge: Familiarity with NEC3 and FIDIC Suite of Contracts, particularly the Engineering and Construction and Professional Services Contracts, is a key requirement. A solid understanding of these will be essential for successful project delivery.
  • Legislation and Safety: A strong understanding of industry and Health & Safety legislation, including CDM Regulations 2015 and the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, is vital. Active risk management is also a core expectation.
  • Electrical Network Understanding: While an electrical engineering background is ideal, it is not essential. However, a foundational understanding of the electrical network within the Transmission business is expected.
  • Driving Licence: Due to the nature of the role, which involves travel and site presence, a valid driving licence is a mandatory requirement.
  • Company Vision: SSE is committed to becoming a leading energy company in a net-zero world. Candidates who align with this forward-thinking vision and are passionate about sustainable energy solutions will find this role particularly rewarding.
  • Inclusive Culture: SSE actively promotes an inclusive workplace and welcomes applications from all backgrounds. They are committed to providing reasonable adjustments to ensure a positive application and employment experience.

Overall, this Assistant Project Manager position presents a significant opportunity for career growth within a dynamic and essential sector. It's ideal for individuals who are motivated by large-scale infrastructure projects, possess strong project management acumen, and are keen to contribute to a sustainable energy future for the UK.
