Commissioning Engineer - Drive Critical Infrastructure Projects in the UK's Energy Sector

Are you a seasoned Commissioning Engineer seeking an impactful role within the dynamic UK energy landscape? This permanent position with UK Power Networks offers a compelling opportunity to contribute significantly to the capital programme across Hertfordshire, Essex, and East Anglia. Reporting to the Construction Manager, you will play a pivotal role in ensuring the safe and efficient integration of new installations, plant, and equipment into the network.

This is more than just a job; it's a chance to shape the future of our power infrastructure. You'll be at the forefront of delivering critical projects, managing a commissioning team, and providing essential technical expertise. The role demands a blend of technical acumen, leadership, and a commitment to upholding the highest safety and operational standards.

Why This Opportunity Stands Out:

  • Significant Remuneration & Benefits: Attract a competitive salary of £80,574, complemented by a 3% bonus. Beyond this, UK Power Networks offers a comprehensive benefits package designed to support your well-being and financial security. This includes:
    • 25 Days Annual Leave plus bank holidays
    • Generous Reservist Leave (18 days full pay, 22 unpaid)
    • A robust Personal Pension Plan with substantial employer contributions (4% employee/8% employer or 5% employee/10% employer)
    • Support for homeownership with a Tenancy Loan Deposit Scheme and Season Ticket Loan
    • Tax-efficient schemes for Cycle to Work, Home & Tech, and Green Car Leasing
    • Comprehensive support through Occupational Health, an Employee Assistance Programme, and the "Switched On" discount scheme
    • Discounted gym membership
  • Impactful Project Delivery: You will be instrumental in developing multiple projects from inception (Gate A) to completion (Gate D), managing a portfolio of electrical projects with an annual value of circa £150M. Your sign-off will confirm multi-million-pound installations are fit for service, directly impacting network reliability.
  • Technical Authority and Leadership: This role requires you to act as a technical authority, providing expert advice on complex electrical engineering matters. You will lead and mentor a team of contract commissioning engineers and fitters, fostering their development and ensuring adherence to UKPN policies and procedures.
  • Career Progression & Development: The opportunity to work towards advanced authorisations, actively develop staff through mentorship, and gain exposure to primary substation and cable/OHL systems up to 132kV provides a clear path for professional growth. The company is also open to considering candidates who may not meet all criteria but possess the potential for training and development.
  • Strategic Importance: You will be operating within a capital programme that is vital to the UK's energy infrastructure. Your role in ensuring compliance, quality, and timely delivery will be critical to the company's success and the nation's energy security.

Key Considerations for Aspiring Candidates:

  • Technical Expertise: A strong background in Primary Substation and Cable/OHL systems, along with an Electrical Engineering HNC/HND, is essential. Experience with primary transformers, feeders, and primary plant commissioning is a core requirement.
  • Authorised Person (AP) Status: Holding full AP status for a minimum of two voltage levels is a prerequisite.
  • Safety and Compliance Focus: A deep understanding and application of UKPN policies and procedures, CDM regulations, ISO9001 quality processes, and a working knowledge of relevant safety and environmental regulations are paramount. A NEBOSH qualification is highly desirable.
  • Project Management Skills: The ability to manage multiple projects concurrently, meet tight deadlines, and coordinate effectively with various stakeholders (Programme Managers, Designers, Surveyors) is crucial.
  • Leadership and Mentorship: You will be responsible for leading and developing a team, requiring strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Flexibility and Problem-Solving: A flexible attitude to work and working hours, coupled with a proactive approach to problem-solving and a self-motivated drive to achieve, will be key to success in this role.
  • Mandatory Checks: Be aware that successful candidates will be required to undertake a medical and DBS reference check.

This Commissioning Engineer position presents an exceptional opportunity for a driven professional to make a tangible impact on critical infrastructure. If you possess the required technical skills, leadership potential, and a commitment to excellence, we encourage you to explore this exciting career path.
