Unlock Your Potential: Network Manager for Novel and Underutilised Crops Initiative

This is an exciting opportunity for a motivated and experienced professional to step into the role of Network Manager, contributing significantly to a vital national research initiative. Based within the School of Biological Sciences at the University of Southampton, this position offers a unique chance to shape the future of UK agriculture and food security.

The Vision: Advancing Sustainable Agriculture through Innovation

The core mission of this Network, NUCNet, is to address the pressing challenges posed by climate change to UK agriculture. By focusing on the development and integration of Novel and Underutilised Crops (NUCs), NUCNet aims to foster a more resilient, diverse, and sustainable food system. This interdisciplinary endeavour connects farmers, breeders, processors, retailers, scientists, and communities, striving for solutions that offer mutual benefits to all stakeholders and the environment. Your Role and Impact: Leading Network Operations and Growth

As the Network Manager, you will be instrumental in the daily operations and strategic development of NUCNet. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Collaborative Leadership: Working closely with the Network leadership team, including partners at esteemed institutions like the Universities of Reading, the James Hutton Institute, and NIAB, as well as internal University of Southampton departments (Communications, Public Policy, IT, Finance).
  • Event Management: Organising and managing impactful national events to foster networking, knowledge exchange, and professional development for the research community.
  • Funding and Dissemination: Leading the organisation and dissemination of funding calls, and managing the review processes, thereby stimulating new research and capacity building.
  • Project Oversight: Monitoring and reporting on the progress of research projects, fellowships, and training placements supported by the Network, ensuring the effective utilisation of BBSRC investment.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Building and nurturing relationships with diverse stakeholders, from academia and industry to community groups, ensuring effective knowledge transfer and influencing policy.

Why This Opportunity is Ideal for Your Career Path:

  • Strategic Influence: Play a pivotal role in a national initiative with tangible societal and environmental benefits. This is more than just a management role; it's a chance to contribute to a significant cause.
  • Interdisciplinary Collaboration: Gain invaluable experience working with a broad spectrum of experts across academia, agriculture, industry, and the public sector. This exposure will significantly enhance your professional network and understanding of complex systems.
  • Project Management Excellence: Hone your skills in managing complex projects, budgets, and reporting within a dynamic research environment. This will be a strong asset for future career progression in research management, project leadership, or operational roles.
  • Career Growth in Research Support: This role provides a fantastic platform for those aspiring to advance in research support, network development, or strategic project management within higher education and research institutions.
  • Flexibility: Hybrid working will be considered, offering a balance between dedicated work and personal commitments.

Key Considerations for Aspiring Candidates:

  • Project Management Prowess: A proven track record in project management is essential, including the ability to plan, execute, and monitor projects effectively.
  • Budgetary Acumen: Experience in managing and monitoring budgets and financial processes independently is crucial.
  • Exceptional Communication: The ability to clearly and effectively communicate with a diverse range of stakeholders from various organisations is paramount.
  • Organisational Skills: Strong organisational abilities are required to manage multiple streams of work, including event planning and funding call processes.
  • Commitment: This is a fixed-term position for 36 months, offering a concentrated and impactful period of contribution.

This 60% FTE (full-time equivalent) position represents a significant opportunity to contribute to a forward-thinking initiative. If you are a proactive, organised, and collaborative professional looking to make a real difference, we encourage you to explore this compelling career prospect.
